G-Star Students Recognized at Forum Club of the Palm Beaches with CNN Reporter
G-Star Students Recognized at Forum Club of the Palm Beaches with CNN Reporter
The Forum Club of the Palm Beaches held its October meeting at the
Palm Beach Convention Center with keynote speaker CNN chief political
correspondent Candy Crowley. The Edward R.
Murrow Award winner and moderator of the second Barack Obama and Mitt Romney
presidential debate, Ms. Crowley hosts her own Washington insider Sunday
morning talk show, State of the Union with Candy Crowley. Fifteen G-Star students from the school’s
Advanced Placement Social Studies classes were introduced before the audience of
700 of some of Palm Beach County’s most politically connected power brokers
. Ms. Crowley personally came over to
the student’s table and introduced herself, and chatted with them in a friendly,
informal soirée. The introduction by the Master of Ceremonies
stated that G-Star is “the largest film, digital animation and performing arts
high school in the nation,” and that G-Star students Jason Clamson and
Dayana Gonzales would be asking the first two questions of Ms. Crowley. Both questions elicited long responses, one
of them almost ten minutes in length.
The students, attending teacher, Assistant Principal, Principal and
Founder were asked to stand and were introduced to enthusiastic applause. After
an exquisite luncheon, Ms. Crowley spoke at length about the grid lock in
Washington, the success or failure of Obamacare and its political implications
for the Democratic and Republican parties, Hilary Clinton’s chances of winning
the Democratic nomination for President, and Iran’s nuclear enrichment
program. When the event ended all of the
students were invited up on the podium to have their picture taken with Ms.
Crowley. Many of the attendees
graciously came over to the G-Star table to talk to the students and
congratulated them on their professionalism and decorum, and expressed
admiration for the quality of the education and impeccable reputation of the
school.

Tonight is
college presentation night in the G-Star Studios Sound Stage 1. A representative from Lynn University will be
here at 6:00 PM. Lynn U. is in Boca
Raton and it is a private university. It
also has an outstanding ESE program.
Students please attend with a parent or guardian.
There will
be a PTSA meeting tonight in the Commissary (Bldg. F) at 6:30 PM. Please come out and support your PTSA. They do great things for our school!
A MAJOR
NOTE OF WARNING! This past weekend the
media broke the stories about something that can affect your student’s future
in college and in the job market. It has
become common knowledge that many businesses are looking into job applicants’
social media backgrounds such as FaceBook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, etc. Once something is in cyberspace it can be
accessed even if you erase it. Based on
what a business discovers they may deny you a job for inappropriate
postings. The national news this week
has now noted that this trend has become standard procedure at many
colleges. That’s right, a student may be
denied entrance into a college because of the use of profanity, inappropriate photos,
and inappropriate comments about other people posted in social media. The most difficult part of this new process
is the student (or job applicant) may never be told why they are being rejected,
they just are. Parents PLEASE have this
conversation with your student about what they post on social media. It could have far reaching negative effects
on their future lives if they post inappropriate material.

Friday, November 8, 2013 is an ODD day. We have now reached over 20,000 views of our G-Star School News Blog that you are reading now! Good things continue to happen all over the school.
The Drama Department's One Acts closed to big audience reviews and attendance. This reviewer felt it was one of the finest ever delivered on stage at G-Star. Over 80 students took part in the four one-act productions. Next up are the Individual Events. Kudos to Ms. Biegler, Mr. Edgecomb, Ms. Gangeloff, Mr. Olsen and Mr. Sherman. You are the Best!
X-Scream Halloween also ended its run with record crowds and profits (it is a big fundraiser for the school). It was the best run X-Scream ever. Congratulations to George Colavecchio and his incredible mass (not group, but an entire mass) of students who put X-Scream on. You did a fabulous job! George and the gang have already mapped out next year's X-Scream theme and he says it will be bigger and better than ever.
The Film, Animation and Acting for Film Departments turn out hundreds of films each year. There are so many, G-Star has its own Film Festival titled "G-Shorts". In addition, each year together they produce one major feature film for this school that is written, directed, produced by and starring G-Star students with Mr. DeCarmine and Mr. Fornari as Executive Producers on this production. Each crew member has to audition for their position just as the actors do. They must present a portfolio of work and prove they are the best in the school to take on their crew position. The competition is intense to say the least. Production on this year's feature film has begun. It will have its world premiere before the end of the school year. This is G-Star's Oscar night each year.
500 STUDENTS FROM OTHER SCHOOLS VISIT G-STAR!
Student Awareness Day comes to G-Star on November 15th. Five hundred students from area Palm Beach County high schools will meet in the G-Star Studios Sound Stage 1 to be the audience for the Palm Beach County Holocaust Documentation and Education Center’s presentation on the Holocaust.
The Holocaust Documentation and Education Center seeks to combat prejudice in our multicultural, ethnically diversified community by educating students and alerting them to the dangers of prejudice.
Student Awareness Days are prejudice reduction symposia whereby 250 to 750 high school students at each program learn the dangers of racism, hatred, and bigotry through videos, lectures, and round-table discussions with Survivors of the Holocaust.
Through Student Awareness Days, the Center encourages these students to learn to take a stand and become more vigilant and aware in their daily lives. They are taught the importance of standing up, speaking out, and making a difference. Above all, our goal is for all students to realize that targeting one group targets all.

This unique program educates future generations about the
dangers of hatred, terror, and the threats against our democratic values and
freedoms. By relating to the tragic, personal stories of Holocaust Survivors,
students begin to understand that no one is immune to the evil and
discrimination bestowed upon them by others.
Through Student Awareness Days, the Center encourages these students to learn to take a stand and become more vigilant and aware in their daily lives. G-STAR HOLDS
TWO BIG EVENTS!
G-Star Theater Department’s One Acts are
a smash hit! “Hilarious!” “Light-hearted!”
“A wonderful night all the way through!”
These are just some of the audience comments after viewing the
performances. The One Acts run through Friday
evening. To buy tickets you must have
your student purchase them through the Theater Department for you. Shows begin at 7:30 PM. The One Acts performances are a fundraiser to
send our students to State competitions.
Each year G-Star student performers garner top honors in Regional
Theater Festivals and continue on to the State Theater Festival in Tampa. It is a great honor, however, taking over 40
students by charter bus and overnight stays is expensive. Please come see the show. The purchase of a ticket will help send our
students on their way!
X-Scream Halloween has
biggest year ever! Record crowds
have far surpassed previous attendance numbers!
The Palm Beach Post named the five best haunted houses in Palm Beach
County with G-Star’s Halloween extravaganza, X-Scream Halloween, as the lead
story! Bigger and better than ever,
X-Scream Halloween offers a chilling walking tour of a post-apocalyptic world
where mutants reign and terror is around every corner. “This is the second year our main performance
is in the G-Star Studios Sound Stage 1.
It is a copy of a Warner Bros. movie sound stage,” say Haunt Master
George Colavecchio. “We’re the only
Halloween Haunt in the world in a major studio sound stage. It makes the atmosphere incredibly different
and more intense.” When the call went
out to G-Star students to volunteer to work on X-Scream, over 400 of them showed
up. You can buy tickets at the door or
online at xscreamhalloween.com. There is a children’s early show from 7 PM to 8 PM – ticket price $5.00; the
full-scare adult show is from 8 PM to Midnight – ticket price $13.00. The show runs this Friday and Saturday night,
then on Halloween night (Thursday), and on the next Friday and Saturday night
(November 1 & 2). This is also one
of our biggest fundraisers for the school.
It’s a great event for the whole family!
See you there!

NEWS
FROM G-STAR FILM DEPARTMENT!
The
latest version of the G-Star Promotional video was produced, shot and edited by
senior Arden Jurskis. Compiling new and archival footage, Arden was able to
produce a promotional piece at the professional level. Thanks Arden.
Throughout the school year, our students turn out over a hundred films. One time each year the students write, direct, produce and star in one major professional film production. This year the film "It's Time" has gone through script development,
cast & crew of over 50 students have been selected, and pre-production is
underway. Production is right around the corner as the 2013-14 student film
rolls out the red carpet for lights, cameras and action. What's it about, you
ask? It is the story of a young, quiet teenager who is trying to come out of
his inner shell while overcoming a traumatic experience.
G-Shorts
is in full swing. This is a student run, independent gorilla style film short
competition where students are responsible for the entire production process.
"Innovation" is this year's theme. The film short program will be
held in the G-Star Sound Stage on Friday, November 22nd. This is an evening of
pure entertainment that you don't want to miss.
WWII
VETERANS DOCUMENTARY SHOOT WAS EXCELLENT!
Our
new afterschool club, the Film Production Club, sponsored by Mr. Suskin filmed
its first documentary project on World War II veterans. Ten veterans from D-Day, The Battle of the
Bulge, Okinawa, and Iwo Jima took part in the documentary. WWII Navy veteran Tom Kaiser arranged the group for
their stories to be told. Mr. Kaiser
said the veterans were very happy with the production and the professionalism
of the students. Mr. Suskin made sure
that the students did work on the production on a professional scale. The raw footage looks excellent. The project is in post-production by the
students and will be ready by November 11th.Sunday, October 13, 2013
X-SCREAM HALLOWEEN OPENING NIGHT A SMASHING SUCCESS!
Our
annual haunted house, X-Scream Halloween (the only walking tour of a haunted
movie studio in the Florida) opened last night to record crowds. Usually, opening night early in October
produces light crowds and gives our student performers and crew a chance to “warm
up” for the next three weekends. Not so
this year! Over 400 G-Star students came
out this year to work on the event and their efforts have paid off. George Colavecchio, our Haunt Master, did a
fabulous job developing his crews, actors, singers, and dancers as well as new
marketing concepts for the event. “The
whole operation is student run,” says George. “They did it all themselves. I just provided a little guidance. These are the most creative kids I’ve ever
seen.” Creative - and organized. From the parking set up, to the front gate
and ticket booth, to the lines into the haunts, and on to the entire event execution,
it ran smoothly and professionally. In a
preview of audience reaction to the haunt, this past Thursday Palm Beach County
Youth Leadership, with 50 top students from the School District’s high schools,
visited our campus for a tour. They
requested a walk-though of X-Scream, one of the largest Halloween events in the
entire State. When they emerged from the
G-Star Studios Sound Stage 1 (over 12,000 sq. ft., 45 ft. high), where the main
haunt’s atmosphere is controlled unlike any other Halloween haunt in the
nation, they were thrilled. “They couldn’t
stop talking about it on the bus after the visit,” stated Attorney Phil DiComo,
one of the Youth Leadership organizers. “They
all were very excited.” X-Scream Halloween is one of our school’s
largest fundraisers. All proceeds go
directly to the school to be used for our student’s needs. Please make plans to attend and bring your
whole family and friends. It’s a great
event you won’t want to miss! The haunt
will continue to run on Friday and Saturday nights, October 18 & 19 and 25
& 26, and then for three nights on Thursday, October 31 (Halloween night)
and on Friday and Saturday, November 1 & 2.
Doors open at 7 PM. See you
there!
