G-Star student Brianna Barnes sat down with former “Today Show” and “CNN in America” host and current American broadcast journalist and executive producer Soledad O’ Brien to discuss an American hero, her grandfather, Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. 1st class Melvin Morris.  Ms. O’Brien’s production company has been filming a documentary titled “Honor Reclaimed” about Sgt. Morris and how he received his Medal 44 years late.  Brianna is her grandfather’s photographer as he travels around the country giving speaking engagements.  She learned her photographic skills at G-Star.  Ms. O'Brien was so impressed with her work she wanted to do a segment of the documentary on Brianna.

G-Star was honored to have Sgt. 1st class Melvin Morris speak to 200 of our students as well as extending our welcome to Ms. O’Brien.  “Honor Reclaimed”, is expected to air Memorial Day 2015 and will feature an exclusive interview with Brianna Barnes and possibly other discussions that were had with G-Star students from their Q&A session with Sgt. 1st class Morris.  “We are very proud of Brianna,” stated school Principal, Mrs. Kim Collins.  “She is a wonderful young lady – incredibly kind and talented.”

On September 17, 1969, during combat operations near the Chi Lang providence of South Vietnam, Sergeant Melvin Morris led soldiers across enemy lines to retrieve the body of a US sergeant, who had been killed.  While under attack, he used grenades to eliminate enemy forces that were hidden in bunkers.  Despite being shot three times, Morris retrieved the sergeant's body as well as sensitive documents that were in the sergeant's possession.

It was an amazing day at G-Star where Americans from different generations came together as one and had the opportunity to see life through a hero’s eyes while grasping a stronger sensation of what it means to be American and a part of American history.
