OPEN HOUSE & TOUR THIS SUNDAY AT 2 PM!

G-Star School of the Arts is having an OPEN HOUSE & TOUR on SUNDAY, AUGUST 2nd at 2 PM for students who wish to enroll this coming school year.  Unlike other arts schools or magnet schools, G-Star has a continuous admissions process all year.  Students can enter G-Star anytime if they qualify and classes are available.  Why is G-Star different?  Other arts schools and magnet programs require 8th grade students to make a decision to enter and stay in a program in high school for the entire four years.  For instance, if a student enters a medical magnet program they must remain in that program even if they change their mind.  It is the same with high school arts programs -  if you enter in a high school arts program for dance, you cannot change to an acting program in that school even if the student discovers in their second or third year that they want to act rather than dance.  This is why those schools have a deadline date for acceptance into their programs – and this is why G-Star accepts students continuously all year.  At G-Star we have no auditions and no deadline date for acceptance because we ENCOURAGE our students to try different programs and disciplines.  We find that the majority of our students change their minds as they go through high school to find what really their passion is – and we train them as they switch to that possible career path.  An example would be a student who enrolls in the 9th grade and wants to be an actor in front of the camera; and then finds out in the 10th or 11th grade that animation is their passion (or vice versa).  It happens all the time.  At G-Star we focus on our student’s GROWTH on their journey to find who they want to become.  We never place a student in a path with no way out to explore their innermost dreams, aspirations and desires in a career that they would excel in.  So please let any friend, neighbor or acquaintance you know that wishes to be guided through a JOURNEY to develop their CHARACTER and PASSION to join us this Sunday for our Open House and Tour.  Thank you so much!

G-Star Student Accepted Into Prestigious New York University Music Workshop!
Tyler Grow is a very special young man.  He is a freshman at G-Star School of the Arts for Film, Animation and Performing Arts.  Tyler was adopted from an orphanage in Romania where he suffered a serious brain injury to the right side of his head due to the poor and neglectful treatment he received at the orphanage.  He struggles with short term memory loss and the auditory processing of speech.  He often has to read lips to understand what is said.  School work is extremely difficult due to his memory issues and processing deficits.  Struggling against these odds, Tyler continued to work with his other faculties most notably in the area of music.  Fortunately, music is processed on the opposite side of the brain and he discovered he is gifted in that area.

Tyler, a friendly and well liked at student at G-Star, has been accepted into the New York University (NYU) – American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) Film Scoring workshop in New York City.  This major honor is the inclusion in the professional workshop where he will be studying with the film composer Michael A. Levine whose resume includes  the recent movie The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, the TV show Cold Case, Batman: The Dark Knight and the Star Wars trilogy.  Mr. Levine has also worked with Cher, Michael Bolton, Rick Derringer, Marianne Faithful, Hip Hop Grandmaster Flash, Academy Award and 12-time Grammy Award winner Dave Grusin, Joe Jackson, and Lenny Kravitz.  The NYU-ASCAP Program Director, Dr. Ronald Sadoff, stated that in 15 years the program has only accepted four talented high school students and they are excited to accept Tyler.

Tyler’s dream is to return to Romania one day and speak to the children of the orphanage to let them know that just because they are orphans it doesn't mean they are less than others.  He wants to change the way people across the world view orphaned and abandoned children and also bring an understanding of children with disabilities.  That even though he struggles to understand what people say, has hearing loss, now also right side vision impairments, and has short term memory issues due to injuries from the orphanage the other side of the brain compensates and he is brilliant musically and creatively.
Tyler with Composer Michael A. Levine

Tyler with Ira Newborn the composer for all the big 1980s movies such as Blues Brothers, Ferris Buellers Day Off, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, etc.

From the NYU-ASCAP web site: “The NYU/ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop will immerse participants in both classical Hollywood film scoring and the techniques of the modern scoring world. Led by industry professionals, dedicated sessions will address the creative process, orchestrating, conducting, music editing, and MIDI mockups. Participants can opt for one of two tracks - orchestral or hybrid - and choose a clip from a selection of rough cuts, representing a variety of genres. The workshop will culminate in a full day of recording sessions at NYU state of the art facilities, featuring New York City's top-tier studio musicians.  Previous workshops included players from the NY Philharmonic and The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.

“The Faculty:
The workshop is taught by some of today’s most creative composers and orchestrators, led by Sean Callery (Homeland, Elementary) and Michael Levine (Cold Case, Close to Home). Veteran core faculty member Mark Snow (X-Files, Blue Bloods) and NYU Film Scoring faculty member Ira Newborn (Naked Gun series) will be featured. The ASCAP Foundation and the Society of Composers and Lyricists, with SCL President and veteran composer Dan Foliart (7th Heaven), will headline additional presentations on the art and business of film music.”

G-Star Board of Directors Congratulate White House Film Festival Winners!

The Board of Directors of the G-Star School of the Arts voted to honor the three G-Star students who won the White House Film Festival.  “We have had five G-Star students in the White House over the past two years working with or being given awards by the President of the United States,” declares Board Chairman Cindy D’Agostino.  “Board Secretary Phil DiComo suggested we honor the film festival winners.  We, the Board, all thought it was a great idea!”  The following is a reprint from the Palm Beach Film Commission State Newsletter:

G-Star Student Film Premiers at White House!

Three G-Star students were honored at the White House Film Festival. Out of 1,500 submissions, 15 Official Selections were screened touching on this year’s theme of “The Impact of Giving Back”.  Students Shaun Besman, Daniella Pereira and Julissa Perez won the Creative Luminaries Award for their short film Give It All Away. Shaun acted as writer, cinematographer, lighting designer, sound mixer and editor. Daniella wrote the narration, performed on screen, and assisted with editing. Julissa assisted with the narration and wrote and performed the title song, Give It All Away.

The students exuded excitement as they recounted their adventure in Washington
D.C. Daniella shared that the experience “was a dream”, adding that the three are best
friends and could not imagine a more rewarding experience. Shaun explained, “It was not at all what we expected. I thought it’d be a side event but we were honored and respected by many politicians, actors and filmmakers that were there to support us.” Julissa added, “Meeting the President was such a great honor. It was so inspiring to see young people giving back and hearing about all of the organizations they have created, especially since we are characterized as a generation that doesn’t care. This was an exemplary group.”

The group reminisced on their experience creating the film, which was submitted at
11:57 on an 11:59 pm deadline. It was all sparked by one of G-Star’s faculty members,
Susan Tieche, who encouraged the students to seize the special opportunity. President Obama presented the awards and emphasized his support of the “Call to Arts”, promising each festival participant that a sponsor from the American Film Institute will be assigned to them. Each student has already been contacted by the group, and they look forward to working with their new mentors. To watch their winning short film, visit:

Massive High School in China Lauds G-Star School as “Greatest High School for Movies”

This past week G-Star School of the Arts entertained Mr. and Mrs. Beiming Meng, owners of the Harbin No. 26 Senior High School in the Xiangfang District Harbin of China.  Harbin High School is a private school with 11,000 students on four campuses.  The city of Harbin is the “Silicon Valley” of China.  Mr. Meng is the Principal of the schools which have graduated over 30,000 students into China’s major industries including the entertainment business.  China has now become the second largest movie market in the world and it is critically short on film industry professionals.  It is this explosion in movie making that sent Mr. Meng on a world-wide search to find the best film, animation and acting high school in the world to study and replicate in China.  He determined that G-Star School of the Arts is that school!  He is resolute that his next school will supply the Chinese movie industry with the professional writers, directors, editors, animators, camera persons, lighting, electrical, casts and crews of the highest quality.  Mr. Meng’s quest began when he and his wife flew directly to West Palm Beach, Florida to meet with Greg Hauptner, Founder and CEO of the G-Star School.  Speaking through an interpreter, Mr. Meng stated, “I believed G-Star to be the greatest high school for movies.  Now that I have seen it, it is as I believed.  It is even more than I thought it could be.”  The hours of touring the school and the discussion throughout the day reached a pinnacle when Mr. Meng proposed a program where his schools in China and the G-Star School could become international associates where his teachers would come to G-Star for training and G-Star’s teachers would travel to China to set up his film, animation and acting programs and train his staff.  “Mr. Meng’s schools are unlike anything I’ve ever seen.  His organizational skills and his educational programs reach far above the average school system,” says Hauptner.  His award winning school is one of the most well known in their country; and his teachers are routinely sent to study in Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Japan, Korea, and Hong Kong – and now, perhaps, the USA at G-Star.  The Harbin High School brochure is filled with photos of its students in the company of many of China’s most famous actors, entertainers and corporate leaders such as Alibaba Group Chairman and CEO Ma Yun whose company just bought China’s largest film company, ChinaVision, that is valued at $8.7 billion.  It is now named Alibaba Picture Group.  “We are looking forward to continuing our dialogue with Mr. Meng and the Harbin High School,” states Hauptner.  “If the stars align properly, it could be a most rewarding experience!”

Emily Serpico has truly become a star in the Hollywood circle of Special Effects Makeup (SFX) artists.  He life is now a travelogue of flying to film industry locations to meet and work with famous Hollywood studios' SFX artists.  Emily has excelled on every level in the eighth season of the Syfy Channel’s hit series FACE OFF.  Outlasting 13 of the original 16 contestants on the show, she has now moved on to the final episode that takes place next Tuesday night at 9 PM.  She has won several of the episodic challenges as best makeup artist including the “Tim Burton Challenge” award and having her work lauded in episode 11 as “...the best make up I have ever seen on this show…” by three time Academy Award (Oscar) winner and FACE OFF show judge Ve Neill (Mrs. Doubtfire, Beetlejuice, Ed Wood; and nominated for the Oscar for Pirates of the Caribbean 1&2, Batman Returns, Edward Scissorhands).  This is quite an accomplishment for the youngest contestant in the history of the show at age 18.

So this is it!  The final episode and a chance to win $100,000 and a new car.  Don't miss G-Star School of the Arts' alumni Emily Serpico go for it all at 9 PM on Tuesday, April 14 on Syfy Channel's FACE OFF!

Emily's concept and application of her Undertaker was imaginative and exciting, as usual. She earns the first spot in the finale!

The penultimate episode of Season 8 had the artists recreating a Wild West archetype as a steam punk cyborg. Emily's undertaker won the challenge.
