Accepted Into Prestigious New York University Music
Workshop!
Tyler Grow is a very special young man. He is a freshman at G-Star School of the Arts
for Film, Animation and Performing Arts.
Tyler was adopted from an orphanage in Romania where he suffered a
serious brain injury to the right side of his head due to the poor and neglectful treatment
he received at the orphanage. He
struggles with short term memory loss and the auditory processing of
speech. He often has to read lips to
understand what is said. School work is
extremely difficult due to his memory issues and processing deficits. Struggling against these odds, Tyler
continued to work with his other faculties most notably in the area of music.
Fortunately, music is processed on the
opposite side of the brain and he discovered he is gifted in that area.
Tyler, a
friendly and well liked at student at G-Star, has been accepted into the New
York University (NYU) – American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers
(ASCAP) Film Scoring workshop in New York City.
This major honor is the inclusion in the professional workshop where he
will be studying with the film composer Michael A. Levine whose resume includes
the recent movie The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, the TV
show Cold Case, Batman: The Dark Knight and the Star Wars trilogy. Mr. Levine has also worked with Cher, Michael
Bolton, Rick Derringer, Marianne Faithful, Hip Hop Grandmaster Flash, Academy
Award and 12-time Grammy Award winner Dave Grusin, Joe Jackson, and Lenny
Kravitz. The NYU-ASCAP Program Director,
Dr. Ronald Sadoff, stated that in 15 years the program has only accepted four
talented high school students and they are excited to accept Tyler.
Tyler’s
dream is to return to Romania one day and speak to the children of the orphanage
to let them know that just because they are orphans it doesn't mean they are
less than others. He wants to change the
way people across the world view orphaned and abandoned children and also bring
an understanding of children with disabilities.
That even though he struggles to understand what people say, has hearing
loss, now also right side vision impairments, and has short term memory issues
due to injuries from the orphanage the other side of the brain compensates and
he is brilliant musically and creatively.

NYU-ASCAP web site: “The NYU/ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop will immerse
participants in both classical Hollywood film scoring and the techniques of the
modern scoring world. Led by industry professionals, dedicated sessions will
address the creative process, orchestrating, conducting, music editing, and MIDI
mockups. Participants can opt for one of two tracks - orchestral or hybrid - and
choose a clip from a selection of rough cuts, representing a variety of genres.
The workshop will culminate in a full day of recording sessions at NYU state of
the art facilities, featuring New York City's top-tier studio musicians. Previous workshops included players from the
NY Philharmonic and The Metropolitan Opera
Orchestra.

Faculty:
The
workshop is taught by some of today’s most creative composers and orchestrators,
led by Sean Callery (Homeland,
Elementary) and Michael Levine (Cold
Case, Close to Home). Veteran core faculty member Mark Snow (X-Files, Blue Bloods) and NYU Film
Scoring faculty member Ira Newborn (Naked
Gun series) will be featured. The ASCAP Foundation and the Society of
Composers and Lyricists, with SCL President and veteran composer Dan Foliart (7th Heaven), will headline additional
presentations on the art and business of film
music.”
